Smoke Alarm Checks

When did you last test your smoke alarms? We’re highlighting the importance of regular checks to keep everyone in your home safe. The following guidance applies to smoke alarms fitted in Prospect homes.

Make sure everyone in your home knows you are about to test the alarms. Your alarms are interconnected so they will all sound in unison. It might be useful to have a household member help check that the alarms can be heard clearly throughout your home while you are testing. Do not test the alarms using real smoke or fire, the alarms have a test button.

  •  Test one of your smoke alarms by pressing the test/ hush button for 10 seconds. This button is in the centre of your alarm. It should immediately make a loud sound.
  • All the connected alarms should then begin to sound within 10 seconds of the first alarm sounding.
  • When you release the test button, the first alarm will stop sounding immediately.
  • The interconnected alarms will sound for a further 3-4 seconds.
  • Check each of your other alarms in the same way.

We recommend that you carry out a full test of your smoke alarm system once a month. You should also clean your alarms regularly to make sure they are free from dirt, dust and debris.

You can find more information about how to test your alarm on Aico’s website. Or phone us on 0131 458 5480 if you have any queries or concerns about your smoke alarms.
